What if I am not able to afford a doctor after a car accident?

When a person is involved in a car accident, their injuries can range from minor to severe, and it is extremely important that, regardless of the type of injury, the person received medical attention as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, medical services are expensive, and there are times when people do not have enough resources to go to a hospital for a check-up, much less for hospitalization, surgery, etc.

What if you don’t have money for medical treatment after a car accident?

In the same way that we cannot anticipate accidents, we cannot even imagine that due to them we will be unable to work and that the bills will begin to accumulate.

If you or a loved one have been involved in an accident in which you were injured, but don’t have the financial means to go to a hospital, here’s what you can do.

  • Medical payment coverage. Some auto insurance policies have something called medical payment insurance coverage. This coverage includes the payment of the insured’s medical bills, in the event that they are injured in an accident. Even though this coverage tends to be less than $10,000, it could at least help cover some of your medical expenses.
  • Health insurance. You can submit bills to your insurance provider if you have health insurance. The amount and payment of your medical bills will depend on the terms of your coverage.
  • Negotiate with medical service providers. Some doctors understand how important it is for an accident victim to receive medical attention, and they are obligated to provide it. There are some professionals with whom you can arrange to gradually pay the expenses that your medical treatments have generated. Any negotiations must be in writing, and you must review the terms with an attorney.
  • Letter of protection. Some attorneys may send medical providers something called a “letter of protection.” This guarantees the future payment of your medical bills once you have received compensation.
