Protect Teen Drivers this Summer

When it comes time to hand over the car keys to our teenage children, as parents, we can be very concerned about their safety. After protecting them for so many years, how can you keep them safe behind the wheel?

Below we will discuss some tips that parents can follow to take care of their teenage driver’s safety and help them to become conscious drivers while they jump into this new stage of life.

First of all, it is essential to sit down and talk with teenagers about the main dangers that they may face when driving, and establish basic rules with them to take care of them and so that they can get practice driving, being more aware of the dangers that face.

1. Distracted Driving: This is the leading cause of car accidents. We must emphasize the fact that cell phones should not be handled and used at the same time. Neither to send text messages nor to talk on the phone. Doing so distracts from the path, and makes anyone stop paying attention to what they’re doing. Eating, moving the radio controls, putting on makeup, and paying attention to passengers are all part of distracted driving. Taking your eyes off the road, even for five seconds, can cost lives.

2. Passengers: It is very easy for adolescents to be distracted, especially if they are accompanied by one or more passengers of their age who may incite them to participate in risky driving behaviors. According to an NHTSA study, the probability of teen drivers engaging in one or more risky behaviors when driving with multiple passengers tripled compared to when driving alone.

3. Speeding: This is another major cause regarding car accidents and is a critical issue for teen safety. We must teach our children to respect speed limits and explain that not doing so can take lives. Teach your child the pitiful statistics out there when teens and speeding are combined.

4. Alcohol or drug use: Talk with your children about the dangers of driving while under the influence of a substance, and how lethal it can be. In addition to being illegal for minors, alcohol impairs your ability to drive.
